Maharashtrian Masala Bhat is a traditional and flavorful rice dish that holds a special place in the hearts of food lovers across Maharashtra. Packed with aromatic spices, nutritious vegetables, and the unique flavor of Goda Masala, this dish is a must-try for anyone who loves spiced rice recipes. Whether served at festive occasions, weddings, or as part of a simple family meal, Masala Bhat is the perfect blend of tradition and taste.
Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a deep pan or pressure cooker.
Add 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds,
1 bay leaf.
whole spices (cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom).
Fry for a minute until aromatic.
Add 15-18 curry leaves,
2 tablespoons of peanuts and fry everything nicely.
Add 2 tablespoons of cashew nuts
and fry again until the cashew nuts turn light brown.
Step 3: Add Garlic and Chilies
Add 1 tablespoon minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds.
Toss in 2-3 cut green chilies and mix well.
Step 4: Add Vegetables and Spices
Add 1/4 cup green peas.
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder,
1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder. Sauté everything for a minute.
Step 5: Add Water and Rice
Pour 2 cups of water into the pan. Add salt to taste and bring the mixture to a boil.
Add the soaked and drained rice into the mixture. Mix well for 2-3 minutes.
Step 6: Cook the Rice
Cover and cook the rice on low heat for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Check if the rice is cooked thoroughly. If not, add a little more water and cook for a few more minutes.
Step 7: Add Final Touches
Once the rice is cooked, add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice,
1 teaspoon garam masala,
2 tablespoons of fresh coriander leaves,
1 tablespoon of freshly grated coconut.
Mix everything well and turn off the heat.
Step 8: Serve
Fluff the rice gently with a fork and serve hot. Pair it with Maharashtrian kadhi, papad, or a bowl of cooling raita
